The Reporter's Beat

Bill Brazell wants to bring transparency to Town Hall.

Bill Brazell, candidate for Township Committee

As an editor, reporter, and writer, Bill has spent his career asking questions, listening carefully, checking facts, evaluating evidence, and explaining complex issues clearly. He wants to bring that same discipline to Millburn's Township Committee — an open process, straight answers, and a town hall that's accountable to the people it serves.

In Millburn, he serves as Vice President of the Millburn–Short Hills 4th of July Committee and as an Environmental Commissioner, where he's worked on issues that shape the community every day. He's also coached girls' rec softball, and his family is deeply involved in local schools and Scouting. You'll often find the Brazells walking their dog, Winnie, through Taylor Park.

The Master Plan

Beth Zall wants a downtown that works for every family.

Planning has always been at the heart of Beth's work. As an urban and regional planner, she's spent her career helping communities balance competing priorities and plan for the future — and she wants to apply that same practical experience to making downtown Millburn a destination for families across Millburn and Short Hills.

She currently manages planning and reporting for Amtrak's Northeast Corridor Commission and has taught future public servants as an adjunct professor at NYU Wagner. Closer to home, she has served on Millburn's Planning Board — including as Chair and Vice Chair — the Zoning Board, and the Pedestrian Safety Advisory Board. She and her husband are raising their three boys here.

Millburn can preserve what makes it special while planning thoughtfully for what's ahead.

Our Vision

What Beth & Bill are fighting for.

01 — Transparency

An open, accountable Town Hall

Bill's career as a journalist has been built on asking hard questions and checking the facts. He wants Millburn residents to get the same treatment from their local government: clear communication, an open process, and a Township Committee that explains its decisions. His commitments:

  • No fast-tracked votes — major ordinances, zoning changes, and budget items get a public hearing before any Committee vote, with no last-minute additions to the agenda.
  • Advance notice — agendas and supporting documents posted well before a vote, not just at the legal minimum.
  • Plain-language summaries — a short, jargon-free explainer alongside every ordinance or major resolution.
  • Open budget — the township budget browsable online in a searchable format, not a buried PDF.
  • Fast meeting records — video, audio, and minutes posted promptly after every meeting.
  • Regular office hours — recurring, publicized times for residents to raise concerns directly with Committee members.
  • Public comment on record — resident questions get a documented response, not just an acknowledgment.
  • Conflict-of-interest disclosure — clear, published disclosure whenever a member has a personal or financial interest in a matter before them.
02 — Livability

A destination for every family

Beth's years on the Planning Board and career as a regional planner give her a clear-eyed view of what it takes to bring life to a downtown. She wants to help turn downtown Millburn into a walkable destination that draws families from Millburn and Short Hills alike. Her commitments:

  • Attract new restaurants — simplify permitting and outdoor-dining approvals so it's easier for new restaurants and small businesses to open downtown.
  • Target the right mix — use planning data to identify gaps in dining and retail and actively court businesses that fill them.
  • Cohesive signage — a consistent, attractive wayfinding system that helps visitors find parking, shops, and restaurants.
  • Sidewalk repair priority list — a published, prioritized plan for fixing cracked or inaccessible sidewalks downtown, not ad hoc repairs.
  • Safer, wider walkways — sidewalk improvements that work for parents with strollers, seniors, and residents with disabilities.
  • Real traffic studies — no significant downtown project moves forward without an independent, up-to-date traffic study.
  • Public traffic data — traffic study results and methodology made public and understandable, not buried in technical reports.
  • No shortcuts for developers — every proposal goes through the full, proper Planning Board and Zoning Board process, with no waivers or special treatment.
  • Enforce commitments — hold developers to the traffic, parking, and infrastructure commitments they make as a condition of approval, with real consequences if they don't follow through.
